What do your pupils do when they see someone being bullied? When they hear discriminatory remarks? Or when they come across someone in need? Perhaps they do want to take action, but something is holding them back. Why does that happen?
Please note: This tour is only available in Dutch.
During this interactive talk, your pupils will learn about the ‘bystander effect’ – the phenomenon whereby people are less likely to intervene the more bystanders there are. A guide will make potential obstacles the subject of discussion using theoretical models and social experiments. Videos explain how bystander behaviour works and how you can break the cycle.
Your pupils will be given a step-by-step plan and will learn how to respond effectively in emergency situations. Three ways of responding are explained and tested. Their own experiences are also examined in detail. This will encourage them to reflect on their own behaviour and how they can transform from passive bystanders into active upstanders.
Please note: Pupils will only visit a small section of the permanent exhibition during the ‘Ordinary heroes’ programme. If you would like to see more of the museum, you can combine the talk with a guided tour or tablet tour.
