A new permanent exhibition will open at Kazerne Dossin by 2030. The announcement was made this morning on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, in the presence of Matthias Diependaele, Minister-President of the Flemish Government, and Caroline Gennez, Flemish Minister of Culture. The Flemish Government is awarding Kazerne Dossin a project grant of 4.2 million euros for the realisation of a new permanent exhibition focusing on the Holocaust and human rights.
The current permanent exhibition opened together with the museum building in 2012. The new permanent exhibition, scheduled for completion by 2030, will appeal to both familiar and new audiences, with particular attention to younger generations. It will take as its starting point the history of the Dossin Barracks as a central site in Belgian and northern French Holocaust history and explicitly connect this history with human rights.
The renewal incorporates current scientific insights, anticipates a growing and more diverse visitor population, and integrates contemporary museum and digital presentation techniques. Through this project, Kazerne Dossin reaffirms its role as a reference institution for the history of the Holocaust in Belgium and as a place where the meaning of this past continues to be explored in relation to human dignity and human rights.
In September 2025, Kazerne Dossin was awarded the Flemish government’s quality label for museums. From 2026 onwards, support for the museum will be embedded within the Culture policy area, strengthening the operations of Kazerne Dossin as a memorial, museum and research centre.
