The “Antwerp Hands” are today one of the most popular tourist specialties of the city. The cookies eagerly passing over the counter celebrate their 90th anniversary this year. Unlike the cookie itself, its inventor – Jos Hakker – is much less known.
Jos Hakker was more than just a baker. The life story of this Jewish immigrant from Amsterdam is closely connected to the Second World War. Hakker was arrested in 1942 by the German occupiers to be deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. He managed to escape and joined the resistance in Liège. As one of the rare eyewitnesses, he wrote about the deportations and horrors in the Dossin Barracks.
This exhibition offers an insight into the extraordinary life of Jos Hakker. Come and discover his story.
The exhibition is free to visit from July 1st at Kazerne Dossin.
This exhibition was realized by ADVN and was initiated by Koekenstad Antwerpen and Piet De Lombaerde. The content development was done in close collaboration with Kazerne Dossin and MAS.
