Lecture: Forging Secrets

28.04.2023

On April 28, the Spungen Family Foundation organises the lecture ‘Forging Secrets’. Keynote speaker Charlotte Krüger, granddaughter of German nazi officer Bernhard Krüger, will share the history of her grandfather and ‘Operation Bernhard’, a secret plot by the nazis to forge British Pounds at concentration camp Sachsenhausen.

Under the direction of Bernhard Krüger, the operation intended to destroy the British economy, but actually financed the German side of the war. With their lives hanging by a thread, 140-plus Jewish prisoners produced enough fake currency to equal the face value of all reserves in the vaults of the Bank of England―an astounding 6 or 7 billion dollars in today’s money.

This sensational true story was the subject of the Academy-Award winning film The Counterfeiters (Die Fälscher). The programme will start off with this movie. After a short lunch break Charlotte Krüger will take the floor.

The Spungen Family Foundation, based in the USA, focuses on educating students and communities about the historical reality of the Holocaust through artifacts.

Programme:

9:30: Movie ‘The Counterfeiters’ (‘Die Fälscher’, 2007, Stefan Ruzowitzky, United States, 99 min)
11:30: Break with sandwiches, courtesy of the Spungen Foundation
12:00: Short presentation by Danny Spungen followed by a lecture by Charlotte Krüger, and a Q&A.
