From 30 October, you can come and listen to an extraordinary audio monument. The monument brings together 25,843 voices to commemorate all the Jews, Sinti, and Roma deported from Mechelen.
The monument is the result of a commemoration project launched by Kazerne Dossin in 2023. With Every name matters, Kazerne Dossin sought and found 25,843 participants to give every name a unique voice. People were able to visit several recording studios to each record one name. The name they recorded always had a personal connection to the participant; sometimes they shared a birthday, sometimes a first name…
These names were edited together into an audio monument that plays continuously throughout the day in the memorial at Kazerne Dossin.
It feels very special that we can now hear all the names. Through this project, a whole community has emerged in which our team and countless volunteers worked shoulder to shoulder to give all the names a voice. Every name now receives the attention it deserves. Because every name matters.
