Open Monument Day

14.09.2025

The second Sunday in September is Open Monument Day. On this day, more than 800 monuments in Flanders open their doors to offer a glimpse behind the scenes and organize special activities. This year’s theme is “In Style,” with a focus on the architectural beauty of our heritage.

Especially for this occasion, Kazerne Dossin is organizing free guided tours focusing on the architecture of the historic site. In a specially developed tour, you will learn more about the history of the old barracks, which dates back to the Habsburg dynasty. You will discover the different functions of the building throughout the centuries and learn more about the symbolism behind the museum building,  designed by architect bOb Van Reeth. He translated the tragic history of the deportations into conscious architectural choices. The monumental portrait wall, which gives a face to the 25,843 Jews, Roma, and Sinti who were deported from Mechelen, will also be highlighted.

The tour is free of charge and will be given in Dutch. The starting times are 10:00, 13:00, and 14:30. You can register via the webshop.
