On Sunday, April 27, the annual Heritage Day will take place. Like many organizations in the cultural heritage sector, Kazerne Dossin is organizing activities for the public.
The theme of Heritage Day 2025 is “Game on!”, with a special focus on sports and games. At Kazerne Dossin, you can participate in the following activities on April 27:
Playing in wartime
For Heritage Day, we are bringing back, for one day only, the experience we developed for Krokuskriebels. Learn about the persecution of Jews and the history of the Dossin Barracks through toys. With an interactive activity booklet, explore the memorial and museum as you discover how children played before, during, and after World War II. Encounter secret toys and objects that provided a source of distraction for hidden children. Throughout the activity, reflect on the right to play today and how you can help protect it.

From oppression to survival, sports played a dual role in the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp. It was used as a tool to enforce discipline, but also provided a means of escape from daily horror. In this new exhibition, discover this paradox and delve into the stories of promising athletes who were deported. Sports, both then and now, are not just about physical strength but also mental resilience. Stories of sports in extreme conditions are both moving and inspiring.

With the Every name matters project, Kazerne Dossin remembers the 25,843 people who were deported from the Dossin Barracks. Each name is recorded by a unique participant. Once the project is completed, all recordings will be played in the memorial. In doing so, we create 25,843 aural memorials, giving a voice back to those who were deported. At the place where their names were taken, we bring them back together.
